Refuge

I ran up a canyon
like a boy on Halloween
The sun slinked down my back
and my heart was full

I took a breath

ancient tempera
softening shadows
the moon draped the canyon walls
with pale bolts of flowing silk

living and living and living
feeling like a part of it

work and leisure
life and death
taking and contributing

as I packed up to leave
a lone bat screamed into the canyon
and fluttered into the darkness
